I listened to the audio version of this collection of essays (read by the author). Ms. Lipman's speaking voice is, not surprisingly, much like her writing: acerbic yet sweet. You feel she is a good person with a very sharp eye and dry wit, and if you met her at a party she'd effortlessly toss off a couple of great lines you'd never forget. This book is an excellent travel companion while driving. Or jogging. Or whatever else people do while listening to audio books. I just drive to them. Her son, Ben, is a wonderful foil. She takes you through funny situations and terrible losses (like her husband's decline and death) with a steady hand. I didn't want the book to end.

I LOVED it and am giving it (lending it) to all my reader relatives and friends. It'll be making the rounds!
This writer is terrific. She has so much wisdom and takes a very light hearted view of life, from the end of it. I was interested enough to look up her biography, since this is really about old age and not so much about her life. Great for anyone in their final decades because she has such a fresh and positive outlook.
This collection of personal essays, originally published in newspapers and magazines, is one of the best books I have read this year. The author, known primarily for her humorous novels, is witty and down to earth. If you love the essays of Nora Ephron, I think you'll be delighted with Lipman's similarly witty take on life. Her essay "Sex education" will have you laughing out loud.
I found my way to Elinor Lipman via Anne LaMotte -- having just finished a few of Anne LaMotte's books, suggested Elinor Lipman's book, and I was taken with the title so decided to give it a try. First ordered a sample, then the full book. It was delightful, and I am next going to track down the rest of her books -- fiction and non-fiction -- and give them a try as well. She's very engaging and entertaining -- and smart.
I had no idea that Elinor Lipman wrote essays and articles so was happy to read this collection. She's one of my favorite writers for her humor, easy way with dialogue, and appealing characterization. Her subjects range from nose hair to sex ed. to the trevails of author appearances. I enjoyed these little stories, some more than others, but especially the ones at the end which concern her husband and his death. There is a great deal of pain in these stories when you lift the corner of good humor and look around.
I think I've read all of Lipman's novels and then bumped into this volume of essays -- personal thoughts, really, put to paper. I'm glad she wrote the book. I'm glad I read it. I didn't think I was getting inside her head. I thought I was looking over her shoulder as she looked out at the world. Very interesting view, I'll tell you.
I do not usually like essays but I made an exception because they were written by Lipman. We went to the same college and lived in the same dormitory so I guess that when you get to the essay about soaps, I am one of the women who huddled around the TV in the living room of Simmons Hall watching soaps.
I thought that these essays were from the heart and in some cases heartbreakingly personal. I especially loved the one about her mother in the nursing home and the requests about her food. So touching and loving.
If you are a fan of Lipman's books, you will love getting a little closer look into her life and if you have not read her books, you will want to read them all after you read these essays.
