This is a book I've only read once. I set a goal a few summers ago that I'd read all the books I hadn't read and somehow got roped into reading all the ones I had read. I really liked the story. Kat's mother is doing something she really believes in: fighting for the right for women to vote (oh, we were sufferin until sufferage...sorry. could not resist) and her sisters are out doing what they want while Kat is stuck at home. Her mother works in picket lines, marching with signs, and Kat misses her at home. Life was not easy for these women, as Kat begins to see. She is horrified at what happens to her mother. I think the book is a fascinating, if not heartbreaking look into the past.
